Alison and I actually met in Val d’Isère, at Club Mark Warner, in January 1984. She and a close friend arrived in Glenn’s second week. Alison and Sue celebrating the successful end to their medical studies, having just qualified as Doctors. Alison had just given up skiing on the third day of her holiday. Two days at ski school, and a day’s private lesson had convinced her that she never wanted to ski again. The day she decided to take her skis back she sat at a table for breakfast with a chap in her group. Oops, instead of being the learner she found the chap had been skiing for 10 years and was psyching himself to tackle the Face with an army friend. Unfortunately he missed this as they talked for seven hours. Alison kindly paid for a guide to take Glenn, oh yes she had met me, off-piste for half a day. The next day Glenn took her to the top of Solaise, and skied backwards as she fell down the Col de la Madeleine to the Datcha Mountain Restaurant. She discovered the heaven that is Val’disere. Over the next few years using Mark Warner wonderful cordon blue chalets Alison learnt the fundamentals in the morning with Glenn escorting her and friends in the afternoon. Finding chalet life rather restricting, we had got married by then. We retuned to Val every January for two week self drive holidays at apartments at La Daille.

We continued in this vein until 1997, through the Olympics, Val d’Isère charm just matured, but the drive became a bit of a bore. The snow never presented a problem, Glenn will only use 4 wheel vehicles. However, along came the Eurostar- Leaving Ashford at 10 am and arriving in Bourg St Maurice at 5 30 pm !! Val d’Isère is only a 45 minute taxi ride from Bourg. Unpacked and in our favorite restaurant by 7 30. By now we found some beautiful apartments, Squaw Valley right in the centre of the village

                                              Skiing in ’99

We had a terrific two weeks back in Val d’Isère; we took the Eurostar again, and have settled on it being our preferred access to the Alps. We booked into a new venue for us, Squaw Valley, a super apartment block right in the middle of the village. It was terrific, and we have booked it again for January 2000. Alison bought a new pair of K2 Magic carver skis, so our skiing was the best ever, as she can now keep up with Glenn even on the most difficult slopes. The snow, the best in 50 years, was magnificent, the downside being the loss of three days, due to some extremely heavy snowfalls.
